AS Roma launch its Chinese WeChat account

Italian football giant AS Roma has launched a new account on WeChat, the fourth biggest messaging app worldwide, in an attempt to reach out the football club’s fans in China.

With 650 million monthly active users in the world, including more than 550 million Chinese users, WeChat is the top social media platform in China and one of the biggest in the world.

Through the new account, Chinese fans will be able to play a weekly prediction game,  access live scores, listen to AS Roma radio, check the fixtures list as well as results, read official news in Mandarin and upload their own AS Roma photos.

The new partnership comes at an interesting time in football club and fan interaction with fellow football giant Liverpool announcing a deal with messaging service Skype earlier in January.

After launching an account on the social Chinese platform Sina Weibo in February 2015, the club continues to increase its social presence in China and follow others European clubs like Manchester United in improving its digital experience with Chinese fans.

AS Roma social media manager in China Li Lilian said that it was important that as a world-famous football club, it reached out to its fans in China.

“Our fans in China are growing every month. The club also attracted a lot of new admirers in China when the players wore a shirt with a greeting to fans in China just before Chinese New Year in 2015. We hope the new WeChat account will allow Roma fans to feel closer to the club” she said.

AS Roma, which recently unveiled its social media analytics in 2015, continues its endeavours to become one of the most active and most innovative sports teams on social media.
