Play-off Prep: Aston Villa and Fulham mirror each other’s Twitter build-up strategy

The biggest game of the season so far will take place on Saturday. But the identity of that particular match may change depending on your allegiances.

Real Madrid take on Liverpool in Kiev of course, but before that is the Championship play-off final at Wembley – a game between Fulham and Aston Villa which will ensure that one club reaches the promised land of the Premier League and pockets all of the associated riches that comes with it.

Dubbed the richest game in football, the stakes are high and so the excitement and nerves are at maximum level. Both clubs have harnessed that with their social media presence this week.

Interestingly, there’s been a very similar strategy from both clubs.

Both, for example, have created a new hashtag for the occasion. Villa are pushing their #ItsTimeToRoar tag while Fulham have come up with #FULFORCE. It’s an attempt to drum up more interest and ratchet up the excitement before the game, but frankly I’m not sure whether anyone really needs to do that – this is unarguably the biggest game of the season for both teams and a look at the normal fan hashtags on Twitter will show there’s already huge anticipation from both sets of supporters (as well as a fair few jibes, too!)

Villa and Fulham have both also been counting down the days on Twitter. With advent-calendar levels of excitement, the Villans have even had Tom Hanks doing the honours, but the Whites don’t seem to have been quite so stringent with their rules, missing out Thursday’s two days to go post!

It’s the job of the club social media team to whip up interest in the club and to make sure fans feel involved in proceedings.

But for the play-off final and a trip to Wembley that’s not as important as usual – surely there’s no need to whip up a frenzy for this one?
