Digital Sport Morning Briefing: Monday 18th December

It’s the start of the final week before Christmas, but the work does not stop and neither does the news on digital sport. Here are a few of the articles over the last couple of days that I hope you will find interesting as thoughts head more towards gifts, family and holidays.

UK Sport and BBC Sport announce live streaming collaboration (uksport.gov.uk)

On top of the recent news that the BBC will be streaming 300 hours of sport online, now that could top 1,000 with events including 2018 Women’s Hockey World Cup, 2018 Boccia World Championships, 2019 Netball World Cup and 2019 World Road Cycling Championships coming up. A major move from the broadcaster and will provide opportunities for many sports to find mass (and new) audiences.

With all the talk and posturing of the major internet companies, BT and Sky are starting to make their moves to protect their huge investments especially in football. The start of what will be an interesting 2018.

2018 will be a big year for football sponsors as the millions invested in Russia 2018 will either be worth it, or not, depending on how well they prepare and execute their campaigns. But there are slots left on the World Cup table and new ways in which to utilise technology are coming to the fore. There are more ways to engage with fans than just at the top.

This will probably the the biggest issue facing digital over the next couple of years. What impact will the repeal of net neutrality have, will it actually happen, and if it does then when? Lots of questions and few answers, especially for a growing area such as esports.
