Under Armour inks lucrative deal with Welsh Rugby
US apparel brand Under Armour has signed what is thought to be an extremely lucrative sponsorship and supply deal with Welsh Rugby which will keep them associated with the union until at least 2025.
While the financial details of the deal hasn’t yet been released, numerous sources suggest that the deal could be worth in the vicinity of £33 million.
Signing on as a technical partner with the WRU in 2008, the extension will see the newly-crowned number 2 brand in the US continue to supply Wales’ national rugby union sides with equipment. Those sides include the senior men’s side, Wales’ sevens, women’s and age-group squads.
The new deal will also see the rebranding of Wales’ Autumn International series in November in which they will play Australia, Argentina, Japan and South Africa to The Under Armour Series 2016.
When the internationals come around again, it will definitely usher in a new era for Welsh rugby with The Under Armour Series 2016 to take place at the newly-named Principality Stadium (formerly Millennium Stadium).
The move by Under Armour may be an indication that the brand will continue to creep into Europe with the brand the official supplier of Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League since 2012 as well as primary sponsor of world no.2 tennis player Andy Murray.
WRU Chairman Gareth Davies said that Under Armour has been a great sponsor of Welsh Rugby and its a partnership that they hope continues.
“With the new partnership extension, Under Armour will become one of the WRU’s longest serving commercial partners, supporting Welsh rugby through three decades,” he said.
“Their support and dedication to our national side has been unwavering, reflecting some great successes for us on the field.”
