Cristiano Ronaldo says hello to China

Cristiano Ronaldo has launched an account on China’s social media Sina Weibo in order to attract more fans and reach out to a population not accessed via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

Accruing more than 300,000 followers in just two days, the Portuguese football star launched his account with a very simple but extremely savvy message to his new followers via the hybrid Twitter/Facebook platform that is very popular among those in Mainland China.

“Hello everyone! It’s amazing to find support from all over the world. With this account I hope to be closer to all of you who support me in China. Hope that you enjoy and follow me around here. NI HAO, CHINA!”

The account is yet another smart digital move by those behind the scenes of Ronaldo’s social media platforms as China reflects a virtually untapped resource over one billion people. This is due to the mainstream networks like the ones mentioned above being banned in the country.

Ronaldo was named as the most followed entity on social media at the beginning of the year and with moves like this, he’s demonstrated that no-one in the sporting world or otherwise comes even close to matching his social media prowess.
