Football TV subscription service gets huge investment

Football TV streaming service fuboTV, has received major investment from corporate television networks Fox and Sky Sports in what is great news for football fans all over the globe.

Launching approximately 12 months ago, the start-up has managed to raise over US$21 million through a range of investors including LionTree Partners as well as former NBA commissioner David Stern. And in the most recent round of funding, it has thought to have secured US$6 million each from both Fox and Sky Sports.

With the service already having over 40,000 subscribers, the US-based video service offers games from leagues all around the world including La Liga and MLS. In addition, it also offers channels including Univision, beIN Sports, GolTV, El Rey Network, Pivot and Revolt, currently costing US$9.99 a month.

While the service claims to have secured deals for more than half of the leading international leagues and tournaments, it still doesn’t yet have the rights to the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, the two most popular competitions in world football. And it is interesting that Fox and Sky Sports have both invested in it considering that neither networks licence any content to the subscription service.

However, director of corporate development and strategic investments at Sky Emma Lloyd said that the investment was a nod by the big players to the type of service that fuboTV offers – demonstrating the general direction that this industry is heading in.

“We’re excited to be investing in fuboTV, at a time when our customers are looking to consume more and more content, whenever and wherever they are,” she said.

“This investment will provide Sky with real insight, and we look forward to working with the fuboTV team as they continue to explore new opportunities for growth.”
