Chase and Curry in new endorsement deal

Golden State Warrior Steph Curry has signed a multi-year endorsement deal with US bank Chase as his profile continues to rise on the back of a stellar two seasons.

Signing agreements with the likes of Under Armour, Brita, Unilever and JBL, the 27 year old will join tennis superstar Serena Williams on the “ChaseMasters team”, part of the ‘Mastery’ campaign that the bank kicked off in 2015 to promote its digital products like its mobile app.

Announced via the bank’s official Twitter account, the financial details of the deal are yet to be revealed. However, the deal is expected to be worth about US$2 million a year.

JPMorgan Chase possesses an extensive sports sponsorship portfolio which includes the U.S Open, PGA of America, the World Squash Championships as well as a number of teams and arenas. Announced as the naming partner of the new home of the Golden State Warriors that opens in 2019, the sponsorship is a peculiar but obvious one.

Obvious in a sense that the bank will soon become synonymous with the Golden State Warriors once the new arena opens but peculiar in that JPMorgan Chase doesn’t typically sponsor individual athletes. Teaming up with the likes of New York Giants’ wide receiver Victor Cruz and Cleveland Cavalier superstar Lebron James in their philanthropic efforts, the bank directly sponsors less than a handful of individual athletes.

It will be interesting to see whether this kind of sponsorship spreads throughout other sports and other banks, especially considering the ‘bankability’ and the appeal that some of the world’s biggest sporting stars have, particularly as they look to pervade more diverse markets. Take a look at its first video with Serena Williams below.
