French broadcaster uses bizarre digital innovation at Euro 2016

From holograms to teleportation, French broadcaster M6 has decided to stand out from the crowd with a range of bizarre live visual effects.

Ahead of France’s goalless draw with Switzerland a simple pitch-side report turned into a bewildering optical illusion, as a presenter casually stepped into the screen and appeared to join her colleague in the stadium:

But the magic didn’t end there. Within minutes of the final whistle in Lille, French stars Dimitri Payet and Adil Rami were on the TV network’s set in Paris. But how? The broadcaster interviewed the players at the stadium as usual, and projected the footage as a hologram in the studio:

“We wanted something innovative for the Euros”, said Phillipe Bony, director-general of M6. “This technique gives the impression that the stars arrive in people’s living rooms. The immersion of teleportation makes interviews more original and fun.”

M6 is the most profitable private TV Channel in France, and they certainly appear to be splashing out with these latest techniques. Traditional broadcasters are facing a battle to remain relevant, however, whether this kind of innovation genuinely enhances the viewer’s experience is still up for debate.
