MLS announce Nigel de Jong’s departure from LA Galaxy with bizarre video

The video mentioned in this article has since been deleted from the MLS Twitter account. Watch it here

Nigel de Jong has completed his move from LA Galaxy to Galatasaray, so the MLS decided to create a video featuring some of his most “notable” achievements during his short stint at the club.

The clip diminishes De Jong’s value by focussing on the defensive midfielder’s attacking record, number of cards received and a poorly-timed tackle in slow motion. With a dismissive tone, the voice over states “the Galaxy will definitely be a better team” without him:

Bizarre. The strangest thing is that this content comes directly from the MLS; imagine the Premier League releasing a “good riddance” video for Balotelli, ending with “In Klopp we trust”.

No one said social media management was easy – especially if you’re tasked with creating content for a globally recognised league with 2.4 million followers – but the MLS has deliberately gone out of its way to slate a player. And the response has been understandably unsympathetic.

From live streaming to virtual reality, the MLS is embracing social media and technology to engage a new generation of fans around the world. Unnecessarily antagonising a departing player, however, should not be part of the plan.
