Wolfsburg and Lyon show football will do the talking at Women’s Champions League final

UEFA’s decision to bring the Champions League finals for both the men’s and women’s events to the same city in the same week means the build-up for two events is underway.

On Saturday evening, Liverpool and Real Madrid will contest their hotly-anticipated final, whilst on Thursday night Lyon will take on Wolfsburg.

Both finals will see some of the best and most in-form players in the game fight it out for one of the biggest prizes in the sport and the women’s final in particular is a stellar occasion. Lyon and Wolfsburg both won their respective leagues by eight points, have lost just one game between them and conceded just 11 goals all season. And with some of the best players on show, it’s sure to be a classic.

Lyon’s Lucy Bronze booked her side’s place in the final with a stunning goal against her former club Manchester City in the semi-final whilst Wolfsburg beat Chelsea – who won the double in England and went the entire domestic season unbeaten.

In the build-up to the game, Lucy Bronze won the BBC Sport women’s footballer of the year award and the theme of the quality on show in this final is one of the tropes as interest grows in the women’s game.

Unlike the two English clubs beaten in the semis, both Wolfsburg and Lyon’s women’s teams don’t have their own social media accounts. Instead, both are integrated with all the other teams in one main account for each club.

Whilst the biggest English clubs like City, Chelsea and Arsenal have dedicated accounts for their women’s teams which are obviously much smaller than those of their male counterparts, the main accounts for Lyon and Wolfsburg are able to build up to this game from the biggest platforms available to them. In the English game, clubs will unite the accounts of their men’s and women’s teams in order to promote each other’s biggest games.

The Women’s Champions League, though has its own channel independent to the men’s account. But in the lead-up to Thursday night’s event they’ve been putting their access to the players to good use.

The interest in Thursday evening’s Women’s Champions League final shows that the sport is growing significantly each year and the quality on show in the final will make it one of the most evenly-matched games of the year.

The recent announcement of the #WePlayStrong campaign and the involvement of Rita Ora is UEFA’s latest attempt to grow even more interest but this week the football should speak for itself.
