Wimbledon: our first look at live sports on Twitter

Today we have been given our first glimpse at live sports on Twitter. The platform is streaming Wimbledon in HD – in partnership with ESPN – alongside a feed of relevant reaction, so you can watch matches side by side with tweets.

In a partnership expected to generate over $50 million in ad revenue, Twitter recently signed a deal to secure rights to the NFL’s Thursday Night Football games this summer.  But this is our first glimpse at what live sports coverage actually looks like on the platform.

Twitter has emphasised that it’s using the world’s most popular tennis tournament as a trial run. “This livestream is an extremely early and incomplete test experience, and we’ll be making lots of improvements before we launch it in its final form,” the company said in a statement to Recode.

Wimbledon is one of the most digitally advanced sports events in the world, so it comes as no surprise that Twitter has chosen the All England Club to trial its latest innovation.
