Weekly Wrap: Man City capitalising on Snapchat and Roma’s wonderful video innovation

Excitement at the start of a new season is a once-a-year thing, unless you happen to follow multiple sports.

For fans of basketball, this was the week most had been waiting for, the start of the new NBA season, but the opening weeks of the NFL and Premier League don’t seem to have been all that long ago. And it makes for an exciting time.

And not just for fans: for anyone who follows digital, sport and tech too. This week, we were treated to the NBA’s new AR app which allows fans to shoot hoops on their phone, and – more importantly – we were also able to catch a glimpse of the league’s brilliant Instagram strategy on opening night, prioritising Stories brilliantly.

They’re not the only ones innovating on Instagram, though. Last weekend, Manchester City allowed the injured Benjamin Mendy to create videos supporting his teammates from afar in their 7-2 win over Stoke City. The popularity of the player and the content has been so great that Mendy’s hashtag #SharkTeam has caught on so much that City have even created a Snapchat filter for their fans to use around the Etihad Stadium ahead of their Premier League game at home to Burnley this weekend.

Two former City players were in the headlines this week, too, as AS Roma drew 3-3 with Chelsea in a pulsating Champions League game at Stamford Bridge, with Edin Dzeko and Aleks Kolarov on target for the Italian side.

This week, Roma launched a new and innovative style of video putting the user in charge of what they see next.

The trial is with club legend Francesco Totti, and allows users to see his best goals, assists or celebrations depending on what they want to see, with a whole host of different pieces of content available to choose from. Luckily for Roma, Totti’s career included plenty of highlights indeed.

The week also saw the World Football Summit take place in Madrid, with nearly 100 speakers from all areas of the football industry present.

Beyond just speakers, however, the summit also included an awards ceremony. Some of the winners included: Gustavo Silikovich, General Manager of Club Atlético River Plate, who won the Executive of the Year; Mastercard, and its sponsorship of the UEFA Champions League, who won the category of Best Marketing Initiative; and San Mames, Athletic Bilbao’s home stadium, which won Venue of the Year.
