Twitter to discontinue Vine
Twitter has today announced that it will be shutting down Vine. Vine pioneered short-form video and revolutionised Twitter when it launched in 2013, but its growth has been stunted by the expansion of Snapchat and explosion of video on Facebook and Instagram. Top influencers – and subsequently brands – are abandoning it en masse, as it fails to innovate and protect itself from its rivals.
Put simply, competing platforms have better functionality and far better incentives to create content.
For sports teams, however, it’s a tragic loss. Sport is about the immediate experience and emotions it creates for fans, and Vine is still one of the finest ways of sharing this. It offers wonderful opportunities to engage with audiences, and teams and organisations have created some of the most compelling content on the platform.
To commemorate, here’s a few of our favourites:
Goodbye Vine, and thank you for the memories.
