Twitter teams up with Hall of Famer to deliver top notch NFL coverage

All summer, the news that Twitter has been gearing up to stream live sport has caused us great excitement. And ahead of the new NFL season which starts this weekend, we’re about to get a look at their innovations in action.

What’s interesting is that we all know – vaguely at least – how Twitter will approach the live stream of the games itself. Since their live stream of Wimbledon in June, we can probably guess that NFL coverage will be in a similar mould.

But what we don’t yet know, however, is how Twitter is going to approach all the trappings of a live sports broadcast.

There’s the game itself, that’s a clear enough concept. But less clear is how fans are going to be able to get pre and post-match analysis, expert insight, interviews and all of the things that fans are used to whilst watching live sporting event at home.

Admittedly, watching it on Twitter will already mark a departure from the norm for fans, especially if they find themselves streaming in an app, on their mobile phones or tablets or casting to their connected TVs. But a majority of Twitter’s audience will still be sitting down as normal to enjoy a football game they’ve been looking forward to all day.

Well, according to reports from Sporting News, Twitter will be offering that sort of service. NFL hall of famer and former ESPN expert analyst, Cris Carter is teaming up with Twitter to offer fans his analysis before and after Thursday Night Football games as well as at halftime.

Carter will use Periscope, a platform owned by Twitter itself, to broadcast his analysis of the game and share from his @criscarter80 account.

Twitter are broadcasting ten live Thursday night NFL games over the course of the season as the company looks to get in on the live sport streaming action. As the Rio Olympics showed, online streaming seems to be how a huge chunk of people are consuming sporting events, and Twitter’s attempt to tap into that market is just starting.
