Twitter releases apps to bring free NFL games to your living room

When Twitter decided snap up the rights to live-stream sporting events, it represented a watershed moment. The traditional broadcasters were becoming less and less relevant with each passing game, and the digital world was taking over.

Something like that.

Because it’s still the case that most people who want to watch a sporting event usually want to do so on their sofas whilst cracking open a beer or a cup of tea and box of jaffa cakes. As big as live streaming has become, it’s still partly a way to follow coverage of the game when you can’t get to your TV. The beauty of the platform, though, is that it can still be used in the same way a normal TV channel can.

With connected TVs and the likes of Apple TV and Amazon’s Fire Stick, online-streaming a sporting event whilst sitting on your sofa is now a reality. And Twitter are beginning to tap into that themselves.

They have recently released apps for Amazon Fire, Apple TV and Xbox One which will allow users to access all the live streaming available on the social media platform, including their coverage of ten Thursday night NFL games this season.

This is the sort of game-changing event we’ve been looking for. Online streaming is beginning to overtake the traditional terrestrial and satellite broadcasting, and with the ability to watch it on whichever device is easiest for you, we’re seeing no signs of a traditional media fightback.

There is always a desire for comfort, for bigger screens and sharper picture quality. Mobile screens won’t replace huge TV screens any time soon. But the ability to choose where to watch and how to watch means that Twitter’s app-based initiative is a game changer.

Will you be tuning in?
