Twitter dominating Premier League statistics

As football teams continue to search for ways to engage with their fans, statistics have showed that fans are just as eager to interact with their favourite teams with Premier League teams having more than 30 million followers, up by 10 million from this time last year.

The same increase has been seen in player follower numbers as twitter confirms itself as one of the only platforms to engage and interact with celebrities previously unreachable. It also is one of the few platforms to give fans an opportunity to interact directly with other fans and like-minded users.

In this day and age, team announcements and even trade announcements are being exclusively posted on twitter. Some clubs have even adopted twitter as it’s primary distribution channel. This has seen the platform become a primary news source eagerly watched by broadcasters like Sky Sports and the BBC.

It’s gaffs like these and the propensity to share it or screenshot it that has seen twitter turn into one of the most popular social media platforms on the web.

In terms of twitter and how its shaped football, these statistics reflect its popularity among football fans.

  • 2/3 of users in the UK use Twitter for something related to football
  • 72% of football fans on Twitter use Twitter at least once a day
  • 85% of football fans on Twitter watch two-plus hours of football every week
  • 81% of Twitter users say that they Tweet or follow Tweets whilst watching sport on TV
  • 55% say football news breaks on Twitter

It’s popularity isn’t particularly surprising considering the readily available information floating around the social media platform. And with a rapidly increasing audience, these kind of statistics aren’t going to slow any time soon.
