The Football League set for a new mobile age

The Football League is set to undergo a digital revolution after signing a massive seven-year deal that will bring clubs official club-branded apps as well as state-of-the-art high capacity stadium WiFi networks in a significant number of stadiums.

In conjunction with intechnologyWiFi, fans will be able to enjoy new official club-branded apps on their smart devices that will be a free digital hub for the respective club. The apps will include latest news, social media content, commentary, highlights and stats. In addition to all that, betting will be added to the app, supplied in association with the Football League’s title sponsor Sky Bet.

In what is likely to be a huge win for all involved, matchday attendees will be able to access the apps inside busy stadiums with the help of free in-stadium WiFi delivered by intechnologyWiFi. However, rather than facilitating open access to the internet, the combination of the stadium WiFi network and mobile application is designed to deliver the complete digital matchday experience to supporters.

Both the development and delivery of the new mobile apps and the installation and management of the stadium WiFi networks will be delivered by intechnologyWiFi at no cost to The Football League, its clubs or their fans. Instead, intechnologyWiFi will facilitate a host of new revenue generation opportunities to clubs.

Intechnology plc CEO Peter Wilkinson said that while the apps are a game changer in itself, the stadium WiFi will completely change how clubs interact with their fans on matchdays.

“Anyone who has tried to log-on in a stadium during a busy football match will know the sheer frustration of poor connectivity caused by bad WiFi or overburdened cellular networks (i.e. 3G or 4G), which can also be hugely expensive (in terms of data) for users”, he said.

“Our solution will revolutionise the digital match-day experience for fans, harnessing the power of great WiFi connectivity and the smartphone in the palm of their hand to deliver a market-defining digital content offering.”

With the apps available for both iOS and Android users and will be free to download, it’s a fascinating turn for football clubs and stadiums in the UK considering the latest developments in France which include fully connected stadiums.
