Take off for Drone Racing as Sky invest $1m

Sky has announced an investment of $1m to deliver live drone racing to its UK viewers.

The broadcaster’s partnership with the Drone Racing League (DRL) will include ten one-hour episodes on a new channel, Sky Sports Mix, which aims to shine a light on sport not previously covered on television.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with DRL to help drive this exciting new sport,” said Emma Lloyd, group business director at Sky. “The investments we make are all about driving innovation, and ultimately improving the Sky experience for customers. We’re really looking forward to working with the team at DRL to grow the sport and to bring something completely different to audiences across both TV and digital.”

The DRL specialises in “first person-view” drone racing, which features pilots flying custom drones through complex three-dimensional racecourses. Sky’s move follows the league striking deals with 7Sports and ESPN, the latter claiming that drone racing is set to become as popular as Nascar and Formula 1.

Wembley Stadium recently played host to a tournament, as EE partnered with the European Rotor Sports Association to advertise the mobile network’s 4G streaming service. Watch below and let us know: will drone racing be the next big thing?
