Snapchat’s new initiative to give sports teams fan engagement boost

Snapchat and sports data company STATS have expanded their partnership to provide the messaging app’s users with in-game statistics across more than 30 leagues in a variety of sports.

The partnership, which started last year, provided Snapchatters with the ability to add live score updates to their in-stadium snaps. With the expanded partnership, users will now have the ability to share statistics beyond just the scorelines for games in leagues such as the NFL, NBA, MLB and the Premier League.

“Knowing how successful our partnership with Snapchat has been to this point, we are eager to see how users of the popular communication app will engage with the additional differentiated data,” said Greg Kirkorsky, the Executive Vice President of sales at STATS. “Snapchat has given us the unique opportunity to see how fans interact with our sports data directly.”

With the rise of second-screening and the desire of sports fans for more real-time information, the average fan watching a sporting event typically does more than just watch the game. As such, the experience in the stadium is now becoming much further removed from how fans actually want to experience their sport.

Fans have ability to sit at home and have access to statistics and opinion on tap, but they don’t have that ability in the stadium. This new initiative using Snapchat’s geofilters give fans access to these stats as well as the ability to share ideas and comment on a social network – another thing missing from the stadium experience up until now.

This might just be the beginning of the boost that sports teams needed to bring fans back to stadiums to watch live events instead of watching at home on TV on on live streams, and allow their fans to engage with the elite sport happening right before their eyes.
