Nissan go high tech with the “Project Controller”
Nissan, a major partner of the UEFA Champions League officially launched the “Project Controller” in Malmö, Sweden on Wednesday – a car connected to a video games console with the mechanics to play football video games.
If the concept goes a little over your head, don’t worry too much because, while the idea is simple, the actual working mechanics of it and how it’s used are not so.
As mentioned, the idea is simple… to play Pro Evolution Soccer 2016 on Playstation 4. But whilst using a Nissan Qashqau in which the mechanics throughout the entire car have been wholly transformed to mimic a Playstation 4 controller.
In other words, all of the functions in the car were assigned the functions of a regular Playstation 4 controller – for example; to cross the ball, players used what would be the windscreen wiper etc.
The project is a brainchild of Nissan’s Swedish affiliate. And once you get your head around it, it seems like a novel idea and a great way for Nissan to get involved as the primary sponsor of the Champions League.
Showcased at the UEFA Champions League game between Malmö FC and Paris Saint-Germain, many fans and interested parties got the opportunity to “play the car” before the game.

While the “Project Controller” was unveiled a few weeks ago, it was the first time that people (Journalists, YouTubers and the general public) were invited to test the project for the first time. And with the project being relevant to the video gaming industry, the football world and the Motorsport industry, there was understandably a lot of interest around the car.
Motorsport journalist Craig Scarborough seemed to be a little confused about the idea but saw it as a novel way that links Nissan as the primary sponsors of the Champions League.
“The first time you hear the idea of playing football game in a care, that doesn’t make sense”, he said.
“Immediately you say: Why? Why? But when you start to understand the partnership between Nissan and the UEFA Champions League and of the new technology that’s inside new cars, it makes sense.”
