New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox could face-off in London

Major League Baseball has taken a huge step towards regular season games in London.

A two-game series between bitter rivals – and world-renowned brands – New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox could be set for London’s Olympic Stadium in 2019 according to reports in ESPN.

West Ham United’s stadium could be the new MLB home in London, and the very things that some Hammers supporters dislike about the ground – the fact that the stands are removed from the pitch – are the reasons it might work best for baseball.

Over the last few years, US leagues like the NBA and the NFL have staged regular season games in London and ahead of last year’s campaign, MLB themselves started to woo a British audience by staging events in London’s Hyde park and Brixton.

Of the major American sports to come to the UK, baseball is currently behind the NBA and NFL when it comes to mindshare and excitement away from its home country. But last year’s events saw MLB make a more concerted effort to gain some traction by playing up its natural tie-in with cricket.

Staging games in such an iconic location as the Olympic Stadium will only further grow the popularity of the sport in Europe.
