NBA tackles mental health issues with the help of the Headspace app

The National Basketball Association announced on Tuesday that it is partnering with meditation and mindfulness app Headspace that will be used with NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, and NBA 2K League employees and athletes.

The NBA and Headspace will work together to build mental health training resources through the app this summer, with hopes to give athletes a stronger mental awareness throughout their careers. In addition, Headspace will go around the NBA this summer conducting various wellness and mindfulness programs for anyone associated with a team.

NBA team staff members will also be granted access to meditation content on the app. One feature they will certainly use is “Headspace for Sport”, which is a program that will give users the tools necessary to strengthen their mindfulness and meditation skills.

“Having a strong mental game is something that we all aspire to in our lives. But when it comes to athletes, it is more than just an aspiration, it’s a daily requirement. Whether it’s used to enhance preparation, performance, or recovery, knowing how to train the mind and apply these techniques is an integral and essential part of sporting excellence.” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in press release.

This partnership with Headspace is by no means a surprise to fans of the NBA. Over the past few weeks, various players across the league have come out on social media about the various mental health issues they face daily. Here are a few examples:

Cleveland Cavaliers star forward Kevin Love wrote a piece on The Players’ Tribune about his mental health issues.

Toronto Raptors star guard DeMar DeRozan opened up about his depression…

Following the news surrounding DeRozan and Love, Washington Wizards guard/forward Kelly Oubre told NBC Sports Washington’s Chase Hughes, “We’re normal human beings”…. “We face a lot more adversity, and a lot more problems and struggles as a normal human being. It’s a little bit more amped up, we just can’t show it,” he told the Washington Post.

While some may say that it’s embarrassing that the league did not already have some kind of program in place prior to these stories, I believe that basketball fans everywhere should give Adam Silver a tip of the cap here. To attack such an important issue in such a short period of time and potentially find a reasonable solution is nothing short of incredible.

Each commissioner of the four major American sports has his own method of attacking major issues that sweep the league, but only Silver could attempt to fix an issue this well in such a short period of time.
