Metrica Sports launches free video analysis tool for grassroots football

Metrica Sports has been providing cutting edge data and video analysis to elite football clubs since 2014.

Metrica has more than 80 clients worldwide, including the Spanish and Portuguese national teams, Seattle Sounders, Santos, and Stockport and Peterborough in the UK.

The launch of the free tool is the first of its kind, and an opportunity for anybody to have access to the same technology as the most innovative clubs in world football.

Data and video analysis company Metrica Sports has launched Play Basic by Metrica Sports Free, a video analysis tool that mirrors the technology used by the world’s biggest teams, and is available to anybody, anywhere in the world to download.

Play Basic by Metrica Sports gives analysts, football fans, and grassroots coaches unique insight and access to the technology being used at the elite level of the game, and the opportunity to use that same technology themselves to create analysis of any match or training session, in addition to footage from professional games.

The tool contains all of the features and functionalities that are contained within the Elite license of Metrica Play’s video analysis tool, used by clients across five continents including the Portuguese and Spanish national teams, Seattle Sounders, Santos, and many more. Users will be able to create clips, organize them in playlists and add annotations and visualisations in a matter of seconds, including Player IDs, Spotlights, Magnifiers and Links between players to create tactical lines.

Metrica’s technology is sophisticated enough that even matches filmed in a local park on a smartphone can be imported to the Metrica Free tool, giving football enthusiasts at every level of the game unprecedented access to video analysis.

The free tool is the brainchild of co-founders Ruben Saavedra, Bruno Dagnino and Enzo Angilleta, who became friends at university. Ruben was studying for a PHD in neuroscience, using data to track the movement of mice and rats, Bruno was analysing human and monkey decision-making behaviour through tracking-data analysis, while Enzo was building his own video production company.

The three founded Metrica in an Amsterdam pub, after realizing they could use their expertise to improve the level of sophistication with which data is used within sport, and thus forge a successful career focused on their shared passion of football.

Speaking on the launch, CEO Ruben Saavedra said:

“Bruno, Enzo and I have long shared a vision for how data and video analysis can be used in football, and the release of Metrica Free marks a truly significant milestone in making our expertise available to the global football family.

We want to change the whole market. We know there is a huge community of people who can do amazing work if they can get their hands on the right technology. Football is for everybody, so why shouldn’t a team of friends playing in the park, or an academy of promising youngsters be able to use the same tools as the international stars they idolise every weekend?

Metrica Sports was founded by three football fans, and we are really proud that seven years later, we are able to give something back to the grassroots football community.”
