Manchester City to bring fans Premier League football in VR

Is the world ready for VR? It’s beginning to look like it might have to be.

Manchester City are a club who are often at the forefront of bringing digital innovations to football, and it looks like this season is no different: City have teamed up once again with LiveLike to bring fans Premier League football in virtual reality.

A statement on the official club website said, “Using a Samsung Gear VR headset, supporters can watch highlights from a number of 2015/16 home matches and are able to seamlessly follow the action across the pitch by simply looking at a camera icon placed in multiple locations.”

City fans will also get access to player statistics and other relevant player information to complete the experience, including a replay centre which also allows fans to view footage from City’s YouTube channel’s output.

Diego Gigliani, Senior Vice President of Media and Innovation at City Football Group, said:
“Our trial with live VR last season was eye-opening, with fans reacting in awe of the immersive nature of the experience. With the launch of CityVR on the Oculus platform, we’re now able to let millions of fans around the world experience that same content also.”

We’re hoping that some of this season’s Premier League highlights will be available on the platform before too long, as highlights from last season does seem a little bit out of date – especially when you factor in the player information and in-game statistics. But this is a huge step in the right direction for VR lovers.

A Premier League football club with the clout of Manchester City embracing the technology quite so fervently can only help normalise an emerging technology sector, especially if it’s done right.
