Manchester City release Twitter documentary series with novel way of engaging fans

Manchester City weren’t all about celebrations this week.

Sunday evening’s unexpected title win was only clinched because Manchester United slipped up against West Brom, but the club weren’t caught cold, capitalising on the celebrations in fine style.

This week, however, the club released a documentary which aired on Twitter on Tuesday morning – and they could certainly plan ahead for that. The City 2 City series documented the global reach of the club, with stories told about grassroots football – and the involvement of the City Football Group – from all over the world. Chicago, Melbourne, Dublin and Shanghai were all part of the series, as were stars like Carli Lloyd, the legendary US Women’s team midfielder who played on loan at City last season, and former players Joleon Lescott and Shay Given.

The videos – about ten to 15 minutes in length – are long for Twitter but short for storytelling documentaries. But they are the latest in a growing trend for football clubs. City themselves have teamed up with Amazon to create a longer documentary series about their own season (which could be especially interesting given the way Pep Guardiola’s side won the title), whilst Juventus and La Liga have made similar partnerships with the online retailing behemoth or their streaming rival Netflix.

Yet the City2City series is different as it sees the club go it alone without the help from a bigger producer or distributor.

But perhaps the most interesting part is the fact that the club chose to make the release an event.

Instead of simply posting the video and giving it a bit push across all of their channels, the club decided to air their documentary at 10am on a Tuesday morning (UK time) as more of an appointment-to-view event. In order to ensure that fans didn’t miss it, though, the club sent out a tweet on Sunday morning urging fans to retweet in order to receive a reminder before the video went live on Tuesday.

Sure enough, those who retweeted on Sunday received a direct message around 9.30 on Tuesday with a reminder to tune into the @ManCity account at 10am.

The rest of the series can be found here.
