Man City are even the best at celebrating trophies on social media

The first silverware of the English football season has been handed out and fittingly it’s the best team of the first half of the campaign who claimed it.

Manchester City under Pep Guardiola have been the undisputed kings of the last few months and their Premier League lead of 13 points (16 if they beat Arsenal in their game in hand on Thursday) proves it.

On digital media, the club have been celebrating their victory hard, even though it might only be the first and least glamorous leg of an historic treble.

In a 3-0 victory where Arsenal’s fans were heading for the Wembley exits with 10 minutes still left on the clock, City were comfortable winners, and the social media celebrations started early with a Twitter post showing the joy from the fans savouring the final few minutes of a cup final they were all but certain to win.

When it comes to celebrating victories on social media there are two strands that clubs tend to focus on: the players and the fans. City have managed to merge the two.

Over the years, the club has talked about a holistic approach to building their club. The Etihad campus houses the first team as well as the women’s and academy setups, too, bringing everyone under the same roof. There are steps to include the fans as well with things like entertainment before games, attempting to make the stadium the home of the club and everyone attached to it. But upon winning the Carabao Cup, City also managed to feature the fans in their celebrations.

The currently-injured Benjamin Mendy featured heavily, even running onto the pitch with a selfie stick to celebrate.

Since his injury, the Frenchman has been a revelation on social media, taking on a de facto role as a link between the players and the fans. His Twitter updates have been refreshingly authentic and compelling, and his Instagram takeover during City’s game with Stoke City earlier this season was an exciting innovation, too.

This time, he was important in the celebrations, literally bringing the trophy to the fans.

When you go to a cup final, you hope your team win, but you never expect to get to celebrate with the trophy itself!

Indeed, using the wonders of modern technology and augmented reality, City were able to take that a step further, creating a feature where their fans could take a selfie with the cup overlayed onto it, once again showing how the club aims to make everyone complicit in the success – players, fans and everyone at the club.

City’s success on the pitch has been sensational so far this season, but they’re making the most of it off the pitch, too. And with the possibility of another two trophies between now and the end of the season, there could be much more where this came from.
