Leyton Orient to make history by streaming FA Trophy quarter final outside the UK

Eight months ago, Wellesley, MA based resident Nigel Travis and Dallas, TX based investor Kent Teague headed a consortium to purchase London’s second oldest professional football team, Leyton Orient Football Club.

They felt the club, with its strong roots in east London, was perfectly placed to reinvent the financial and fan engagement model of English football teams by taking advantage of the latest technology available and the worldwide interest in English soccer.

The club announced today (23rd February) that the Buildbase FA Trophy Quarter-Final at home to fellow National League team Gateshead will be streamed on Saturday February 24 at 3pm UK time (10am USA EST time, 6pm UAE, 12am Japan, 2am Australia). The stream will have pre-match interviews and commentary with the expectation that this will set a standard for the club’s future broadcasts. It will be sponsored by ice cream chain Baskin-Robbins.

The stream will be priced at £9.95 and will be available to fans outside the UK.

It is thought that this is the first time that an FA Trophy game, other than the final, has been aired outside of the UK and Leyton Orient are using this to attract potential fans who may be interested in supporting a famous football club in London as well as gauging the business interest for future sponsorship.

Leyton Orient CEO Danny Macklin said: “We are excited about this initiative and believe that this will start a new commercial venture for Leyton Orient in the future. The game is expected to be very competitive and the perfect game to launch international streaming”
