LeBron crowned NBA’s social media King

Following the conclusion of the All Star weekend, LeBron James has been anointed the NBA’s king of social media, registering a digital value of almost double his nearest rival.

In a report released by Texas-based social media intelligence organisation MVPindex, James’ value on digital platforms alone exceeds US$15 million. This includes social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube.

To determine James’ brand value, MVPindex examined how many followers the 31 year old has across different social media platforms and took into account the level of engagement that his accounts achieved. This includes how many people shared James’ content, Retweeted it and commented on it. It also has a method of evaluating the sentiment of online conversation around him.

Interestingly, the platform that James’ performed best on was Instagram with over 340 million impressions since October 20 that was worked out to be worth about US$10.4 million in social value for brands that James represents including Beats by Dre and Nike.

The ranking is merely another accolade for James who is fast becoming one of the most valuable players in the world with his appeal on both sides of the Atlantic a key factor.

The player that ranked nearest to James in terms of overall digital value is Stephen Curry who also happens to be one of the hottest players in the NBA at the moment. His value came in a tick over US$7.5 million.

According to the valuation platform, the total social media value of NBA All-Stars is approximately US$43,736,112.03, with Instagram ranking as the best platform (approx $24.5 million) and Facebook No. 2 at $10.1 million (approx).
