La Liga to become first European football league to broadcast match via Facebook Live

In partnership with Grabyo, Spain’s La Liga will live stream the fixture between Athletico Madrid and Athletic of the Spanish Women’s First Division on Facebook Live on Saturday 28th of May.

In what will be the first competitive football fixture to be officially streamed on Facebook Live by a European football league, it will be available worldwide in every country with no geoblocking of content in place.

The match between third-placed Atletico Madrid and first-placed Athletic will be broadcast to Facebook in TV-quality, exactly the same as would be seen on TV with professionally captured video including different angles and commentary.

CEO of Grabyo Gareth Capon said that it was important leagues and rights holders used the essential reach and the potential organic reach of the major social media platforms.

“Live streaming is the most important trend in social media this year and LaLiga broadcasting a competitive fixture to Facebook is a great example of major sports rights holder using the reach, engagement and viral distribution on social media platforms to distribute their content”, he said.

“The global shift towards fans consuming content on their mobile devices is driven by social platforms with video driving greatest engagement for fans around the world. Consumers have smartphones within arms reach 24 hours a day, no other platform offers this opportunity for reach and viewing across all demographic groups.”

As leagues approach this significant ridge of live streaming through these digital platforms, one can only assume that they’re very close to signing rights deals with the major European clubs and rights holders. On the other hand, live streaming through digital platforms offer less popular leagues exposure which they would otherwise not get as there are less broadcast rights issues to worry about.
