How PSG and PSV celebrated league title victories – and how Barcelona are almost there

After last weekend, in the biggest leagues in Europe, there are ongoing title races in only Italy, Spain and Portugal. Two of those races are more or less over, too.

There’s little suspense around European football for the next few weeks, outside of relegation battles, European places and pride. But there still are domestic and continental cup competitions up for grabs, and plenty of players are also playing for their World Cup places for Russia this summer.

All over Europe this weekend, though, there have been league title celebrations. Manchester City celebrated winning the Premier League title in style, whilst Bayern Munich were able to do the same thing a week earlier. Indeed, the Bavarians were able to celebrate after winning on the pitch instead of watching their rivals slip up, leading to wonderful scenes and celebrations in front of their fans.

But Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven and French behemoths Paris Saint-Germain were also crowned champions.

The Dutch side marked the occasion with an event in their home city of Eindhoven surrounded by their fans who took to the streets in celebration, whilst their official Twitter account documented proceedings and posted the videos.

Later, they would also tweet a specially made video of the celebrations after the final whistle of their game at the weekend, recapping the scenes and reliving the moment.

The French champions, however, had little time to cut loose with their celebrations, but the Twitter accounts were able to do that even if the players had a French Cup semi final to look forward to in the midweek.

The French and Dutch champions may have been able to celebrate winning a title, but the Spanish league leaders, Barcelona, may not be over the line yet. They are miles ahead of Atletico Madrid who occupy second in the table, but there are just about enough games remaining for that lead to be overhauled in the case of a Catalan collapse.

That doesn’t look particularly likely, however. So far, no team has found the formula to beat Barcelona in La Liga, and they have now gone 39 games unbeaten in their domestic league – a record.
