How Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City promoted their teams in the FA Cup semi finals

Chelsea and Arsenal will play each other at Wembley in the FA Cup final.

Two of the top Women’s Super League teams in the country will meet at the home of English football in a repeat of last season’s men’s final, which was won by the Gunners. Arsenal beat Everton away from home in the first semi final, whilst Chelsea triumphed over Manchester City at home.

It will be a final between two of the English football’s best, with plenty of international players on show. It may also be a chance for both clubs to clinch multiple pieces of silverware: Arsenal have already won a cup this season, beating Manchester City in the WSL Cup, whilst Chelsea are a point clear at the top of the league and are in a Champions League semi final against German side Wolfsburg.

It will also be a final between two of the most digitally savvy women’s outfits in the country.

Both teams – along with Manchester City, too – are making big strides to merge their men’s teams and their women’s teams together into one big family, which also incorporates the youth set-ups, too.

Chelsea, from the tweets above, are making a concerted effort to do this. City have launched their Same City, Same Passion campaign, with the hashtag #SameGoals; just a quick search through the subsequent tweets gives a heartwarming and thoroughly optimistic account of the strides women’s football can expect to make in the future when clubs with the power and prestige of these three are so committed to success on and off the pitch. Indeed, with the potential new arrival of Manchester United into the WSL set-up next year, that’s another positive step forward.

And then there’s the other element – the broadcasting. This year, the WSL has been clever in making games available on digital and social media platforms as well as on TV channels, both free-to-air and subscription based. They’ve covered all bases in that regard. The FA Cup final will be played at Wembley again and will be broadcast on TV, too. This year, both semi finals were broadcast for the very first time.

Both City and Chelsea have made games available on their own Facebook Live channels when it comes to FA Cup or Champions League games which haven’t been on UK TV channels.

And on a day when Manchester City won the Premier League title, the club’s entire focus seemed to be on their semi final, instead.

Not many people expected Manchester United to lose at home to the club at the bottom of the Premier league table, and the club rightly capitalised on that moment when it was presented to them. But it’s clear which game the Premier League champions (rightly) thought would have the biggest impact on them that day.

Arsenal’s main men’s Twitter account, too, wished their female counterparts good luck in their semi final before kick-off, but it might have been nice to see the club celebrate their victory across all channels.

Perhaps owing to the men’s team’s defeat away to Newcastle United around the same time they felt the timing wasn’t quite right, but whilst we’re seeing more and more promotion of the women’s teams across all the social accounts of the biggest Premier League clubs, opportunities to shout about success shouldn’t be off limits.

Overall, though, it’s an incredibly positive time for women’s football as we reach the end of the season. We’ve seen the power that social media has when it’s put to use by football clubs. And if they’re using it to integrate all parts of their club into one big family, that’s when the sport will surely see even more growth.
