The American superstar helped himself to four Olympic gold medals in the 200, 400 and 4 x 400m relays at the Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney Games, as well as a “mere” nine world titles. He also held the world records in the 200 and 400m for 12 and 17 years respectively, the former finally falling to a certain Usain Bolt. Following his success at the Atlanta Olympics, where he was the face of the Games and wore golden spikes, Johnson became the sport’s first “million dollar athlete.” Since his retirement, he has become not only one of the most respected figures in the sport but a familiar face and voice on BBC TV, where he has built up a reputation as one of the best and most authoritative pundits in British sports television.
