Covering the party: Liverpool’s social media accounts build up to another epic final

If it weren’t for the nerves it’d be party time for Liverpool Football Club.

They might well be the underdogs for the Champions League final in Kiev on Saturday evening, but there’s just something special about Liverpool and European competition. This is a club with five trophies to its name, though this time they come up against one of the only other clubs who can claim a better record: Madrid are looking for their 13th.

This week, Liverpool’s Twitter account has been awash with build-up, as you’d expect, and although there have been some very real problems for Reds fans traveling to Eastern Europe this week, spirits haven’t been dampened.

Greeted by a massive blow-up Champions League trophy, fans of both clubs will be left in no doubts what the big show in Kiev is this weekend. Unfortunately for Liverpool’s social media team, Twitter only supports four images per tweet – a fifth might have been more apt….

There’s also been a behind-the-scenes look at the special kit that Jurgen Klopp’s team will wear on the night, with the date and location embroidered onto the front of the shirt.

These are all pieces of social content that can be planned for. Everyone knew where the final was, they knew there’d be a chance for build-up involving the city and the atmosphere in Kiev. They also knew that there’d be space for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the specials shirts being made and for interviews with managers and players.

But sometimes an event just lands itself in your lap.

This week, as luck would have it from those running the social account’s point of view, fell the birthday of Vladimir Smicer, one of the heroes of the epic 2005 triumph in Istanbul. If Liverpool are to win this one, you get the feeling it’ll be just as historic.

In the end, you can plan all the content you like, portray all the electric atmosphere of the city and talk about history all week, but nothing will come close to stoking emotion and memory when building up excitement.

The image of the former Czech international with the big-eared trophy on his head is enough to remind anyone of a time when the seemingly impossible was made reality.
