Cardiff City and the power of social media to plan for next season

March time means title races, relegation battles and jostling for position in play-off places or Champions League spots. It can either mark a and boring long run-in for those clubs in the grips of mid-table mediocrity or it can be the start of one of the most exciting times of the season.

For most football fans, there’s a long way to go with a lot of football left to be played – especially since this is a World Cup year and after the season ends there’ll still be plenty of football to enjoy – but few are looking towards next season.

That has to be the job of the clubs themselves, though, as preparations for the new season have to start sooner than you might think. Especially when it comes to season ticket renewal.

Now is the time most clubs are starting to think about pricings for next season and hoping that performances on the pitch will be enough to persuade their fans to part with their money again ahead of the next campaign.

This is where social media can be a powerful tool.

The chance to create a video to gee up supporters with a view to selling some extra season tickets is a hard balance to strike, but it helps if your team is performing well, and it is even easier if next season looks like it might be an exciting one.

Cardiff City are in such a position. The Bluebirds have some massive games left this season against promotion-chasing rivals, but with a four-point gap between them and third place, an automatic promotion spot is well within their grasp. Neil Warnock’s side just need to grind out results between now and the end of the season in order to be able to call themselves a Premier League club again next season, so now’s the perfect time to be capitalising on their fans’ excitement to convert some season ticket sales.

By putting the players to work doing odd jobs around the club for the purposes of the video, the club have only increased interest in season tickets for next season. Those seats will only be even more in-demand if Premier League football arrives at the Cardiff City Stadium next season, including the possibility of a derby meeting with Swansea City, too.

It might not seem like the most obvious piece of content that a football club will create during the course of the season, but it certainly is an important one.
