Brisbane Heat launch immersive technology to link players to fans

Since its inception in 2011, the Australian Big Bash League has been at the forefront of innovation in cricket. The adrenaline-fuelled cocktail of fireworks, packed crowds and finest players in the world has flipped the traditional image of cricket on its head.

80,000 fans watched the Melbourne Derby at the MCG in January. 80,000. For cricket. With pumping music, highlights uploaded to social media within hours, flashing stumps and bails and outlandish playing gear, the Big Bash possesses a remarkable ability to engage a new generation of fans.

Now, it’s entering the world of Virtual and Augmented Reality.

Through exclusive VR technology, Brisbane Heat fans can walk in the shoes of players, touring a virtual reconstruction of the dressing rooms and walking out to the middle on match day.

The headsets will initially be available in selected shopping centres displays from next week, but the Heat VR app is available to download for a separate immersive experience, which features new collector cards appearing to come to life when viewed through the app.

Aside from engaging fans, the technology also opens up new corporate opportunities, with brands reportedly interested in having their products included in the immersive experience.

Brisbane Heat general manager Andrew McShea expects the hi-tech initiatives to prove extremely popular, especially with the family market that has fallen in love with the Big Bash in recent seasons.

“Heat VR is a game changer when it comes to fan engagement… We are thrilled to be the first club to launch a virtual reality brand in Australian and world Cricket,’’ he said. “We believe a Heat match day experience is one of the best in Australian sport and with only four home games at the Gabba, Heat VR gives us the ability to take our game day experience to fans all over the world.

“We’re delighted to be able to lead the way with this innovation, which complements the BBL’s reputation for creating a fun and exciting experience for all the family. Heat VR is another example of our focus on innovation and providing our fans with an unrivalled fan experience. I think we have all dreamt of playing for our favourite sporting team and now Heat VR makes those dreams a reality”.
