Bayern Munich’s first game of the season to be shown in VR

Ever wondered what it would be like to watch football in VR?

Would it be an amazing, immersive experience? (Surely) Would that be overshadowed by having to sit in your front room with your phone attached to your face? (Probably) Would people drive past and be tempted to call the police at the sight of strange, alien creatures sitting in their front rooms with some odd protrusions on their faces? (Yes)

Well wonder no more – because before the start of the new Bundesliga season, which kicks off on Friday, FOX Sports have teamed up with VR specialists Next VR to bring viewers in the US, Canada, the Caribbean, Asia and select European countries the first game of the new season in virtual reality.

That means, if you’re in one of those territories, and you have a Samsung phone and you have access to a Samsung Gear headset and you download the Next VR app, and you sit in your room with a fancy headset on, you can watch Bayern Munich v Werder Bremen in VR.

The deal continues the relationship between FOX and Next VR who have broadcast other sporting events in VR before, but this will be a first for the Bundesliga.

“We are thrilled to continue our relationship with FOX Sports and for the opportunity to produce a Bundesliga match,” said Brad Allen, Executive Chairman of NextVR. “We are excited about the growing diversity of NextVR’s content portfolio as we continue to provide international sports fans with a wide array of options including the opening game of the Bundesliga season.”

Now we’ll just have to see if watchiong football in VR really does take off.
