Bayern Munich celebrate sixth Bundesliga title in a row with a nod to a modern classic

We’re only a week or so into April, the Champions League quarter finals aren’t yet finished, and there’s still a lot of football to be played between now and the small break before the World Cup: but Bayern Munich have already celebrated winning a league title.

The Bavarians are the champions of Germany for the sixth time in a row, and their league dominance is now so well ingrained that you’d think European competition would matter to them more than domestic trophies.

But the day you can’t shout about a title victory is the day you have to seriously consider what we want from sport.

This weekend, Bayern’s title celebrations were long and loud on social media, giving fans a chance to revel in their victory before they take on Sevilla in midweek for a place in the Champions League semi-finals one more time.

Perhaps the most satisfying part of the whole thing, from the point of view of Bayern’s social media team, is the fact that this victory wasn’t unexpected. With Jupp Heynckes’ team so far ahead in the league table, there was no real danger of tempting fate by strategising about how best to celebrate eventual victory.

To have made a video or an image for social media was to be expected. But Bayern weren’t just celebrating one title victory, they were celebrating six in a row.

There was also a nod to the club’s recent cat selfie, where they modified the team’s social media hashtag from #MiaSanMia to #MiaSanMeow. This time, they changed it to #MiaSanMeister to celebrate the fact they are once again champions.

All in all, it’s been a good few weeks for the German champions, with qualification for the Champions League semi final looking likely on Wednesday night and a German Cup semi final the following week. It could be another vintage season for the Bavarians, and manager Heynckes could seal his second treble in a row – you can imagine how the celebrations will go if that happens.
