Apple’s water-resistent watch might be a game-changer for swimming

The emergence of waterproof phones has accelerated massively over the past few years. Initially a little bit of a novelty, they’re now just another thing you expect from your phone. And Apple’s new breed of watches are also getting in on the action.

Waterproof watches seem to make more sense than waterproof phones, really. If your phone is waterproof it means you won’t be heavily sanctioned for your clumsiness – drop it down the toilet or into the sink and you’ll be saved the expense of buying a new one. But a waterproof iWatch means you can enter the water whilst wearing it – and that’s surely a bigger deal than entering the water whilst bringing your phone with you.

And if you’re a swimmer, and you have an Apple watch then you might also be interesting in ‘the world’s first swimming app for Apple watch’.

MySwimPro is a new app for the iWatch that syncs with your iPhone.

The watch syncs with the phone app which comes with set swim workouts built into it, though that’s only available on the Apple Watch 2 rather than the first one, and that’s because the newest version is waterproof up to 50 metres.

The MySwimPro website states that “The Watch App offers three experiences for swimmers to choose from: Structured Workout, Pool Swim, or Open Water Swim. Biometric data such as heart rate, distance, and pace per 100 is logged in real-time and syncs with HealthKit.”

Legendary Paralympic swimmer Teresa Perales was a Samsung ambassador during this year’s Paralympic games, taking video blogs on the new Samsung S7 and posting them to YouTube, and even took us underwater at a training session with her teammates in her first vlog.

With waterproof phones will come waterproof technology – after golf, cycling and running, maybe the rise in wearable technology for swimming will make it a more viable workout for tech savvy newbies. Maybe swimming will become the new big craze!
