#2: Tokyo 2020 with Eurosport, branded podcasts and why Retweets are trash!

If you want to read a few things that are a bit different then look no further than the below. Every day I’ll put together some of the most interesting articles I find so that you don’t have to. Just keep your eye out for a new one coming out each day and then enjoy!

The future is now – AR and VR development in the sporting world (ucfb.com)

A great write up on our own #DSManchester event held at the University of Salford last month. Their Etihad Campus student Carolin Boldt attended out gathering and explains what happened during the day and some of the best quotes to come out from it. Thanks Carolin!

Eurosport vow to take technological innovations at Pyeongchang 2018 to next level for Tokyo 2020 (insidethegames.biz)

PyeongChang was the first experience for Eurosport and their parent company, Discovery, on what putting on a full Olympics production is like. Their experimentation with innovations such as The Cube has helped test out what works and what doesn’t as they start planning for future events, including Tokyo in 2020.

Retweets Are Trash (theatlantic.com)

I enjoyed this look at what the social media world would look like without the ability to retweet. A couple of interesting points made where the fact that around a quarter of all content on Twitter are retweets. And that the number one emotion that led to a retweet was anger. Neither of these should come as a surprise and you can see why people have flocked to the likes of Instagram and Snapchat where this behaviour is far less prevalent. If you had the ability not to see any RTs in your feed would you do it? I would.

Bleacher Report’s House of Highlights eyes soccer as a new growth area (digiday.com)

House of Highlights has been a huge success on Instagram with over 8m followers, with basketball making up the majority of its content sup to now. Since being bought by Bleacher Report, they have access to NBA content and from the Autumn they can include Champions League footage as well (in the US). It’s going to be fascinating to see how this helps european football within this massive market and in what way it will be covered. Hopefully we’ll catch up with them soon to find out.

Branded Podcasts Are The Ads People Actually Want To Listen To (fastcompany.com)

As a podcast host and avid listener, I have some 25 on my iTunes list currently, I’ve long known of the power of advertising within podcast – though it is still tough to get companies on board. Branded podcasts are the next step and the likes of Gimlet Media, creators of Start Up and Reply All amongst other top series, have been leading the charge. Helping the likes of Virgin, Gatorade, Microsoft, Tinder and ebay reach new audiences.
