Under Armour launches its 3D printed shoe

A few months after New Balance, Nike and adidas launched the first running shoe developed using 3D printing technology, Under Armour has joined them, releasing its first ever 3D printed shoe.

Named the “UA Architech” and announced at the beginning of the month, the shoe has been built in partnership with 3D design company Autodesk after two years research and is quite a huge step forward considering they are relatively new to the shoe market in general.

Both companies wanted to provide the best shoe possible for athletes with the ultimate stability and cushioning to allow them to practice, perform multiple types of exercises and avoid having to switch to a different style shoe.

Using Autodesk Within, a design software from Autodesk which uses algorithms to test concept after concept until they create the best midsole possible. Under Armour’s Architech has, according to the company, found the perfect balance of comfort, cushioning, and support. The shoe also features a 3D upper design to provide a comfortable and breathable environment for feet.

The arrival of Under Armour in this market should come as no surprise to anyone with their eye on the apparel market as they are consistently looking to take on the big boys. And, after the shoe gets traction in the market, they’re only going to get more competitive as they start applying feedback from consumers to its next batch of shoes.

The UA Architech has already proved to be a success after a limited edition of 96 pairs retailing for US$300 each were sold on March 18th through Under Armour’s website and at its headquarters in Baltimore.
