The Social World Cup – who’s the most popular at this year’s Rugby World Cup?
The Rugby World Cup is on the lips of nearly everyone this month with the tournament being held in England (with some games in Cardiff). And during these types of tournaments, there’s always going to be cool infographics about sponsors and rugby consumer consumption etc that emerge. However, few infographics will be as cool as this one.
Our friends at Stay Sourced have released a chart that measures the Rugby World Cup’s social popularity and have ranked them accordingly.
Ranked on twitter followers, it’s surprisingly Ireland that emerges as the Social World Cup winners with over 1.7 million twitter followers far eclipsing that of New Zealand who had 1.08 million followers (who they met in the Social World Cup final). In terms of the rankings overall, Ireland take the cake followed by Wales in second with New Zealand in third.
The chart goes even deeper too as it rates the players’ twitter followers and then groups them into a first XV. All Blacks players Sonny Bill Williams and Dan Carter are the most followed rugby players with the former having more followers than all of the rugby unions of Fiji, Uruguay, Japan, USA, Argentina, Tonga, Georgia, Namibia, Italy, Canada and Romania put together.
The chart doesn’t stop there, using some consumption trends and extrapolation figures combined with stadium capacities to determine how many pints each stadium will sell and how many will be consumed.
Despite not being as popular as a tournament like the Football World Cup, the Rugby World Cup’s numbers aren’t to be scoffed at with the game’s growth rapidly heading upward.
