Stade de Reims closes down all its social networks for the Champagne derby

There’s a big derby in France’s second division, Ligue 2, on Monday night. Perhaps you didn’t know that!

Well, with falling attendance rates at football games in France, teams are struggling to adapt to a new world where people are more ready to get their information about football games from Twitter than from going to the game itself.

So Stade de Reims have decided to take action ahead of their derby against Champagne region rivals Troyes on Monday night. They’ve taken the novel decision to suspend their social media accounts in the lead up to the game in order to get more fans to their Stade Delaune on Monday. Temporarily, anyway.

The club hasn’t posted since December 15, when it posted this:

It says: ‘You don’t follow a derby, you live it. So Stade de Reims has closed its social networks until the end of the Reims v Troyes game (#SDRESTAC). To show your enthusiasm, come to the Delaune instead.”

The French club have gone to great lengths to temporarily give their social media team a holiday close down their social networks. On Facebook, they explain in more detail:

‘We have more than 360,000 on our social networks, but how many will we have at the Delaune on Monday night?’

As far as ideas to boost attendances go, this is a fairly novel one. And we really hope it works out for them!
