Snapchat launches its official Kobe Bryant live story

For Kobe Bryant’s final trip to take on LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers,  Snapchat has unveiled a story dedicated to the player to cover the fixture named “Kobe in Cleveland”.

Following the announcement that he will retire at season’s end, the final leg of the season has been built as an opportunity for NBA fans across the US to farewell the basketball great. And Snapchat ensured that its users would be given digital front row seats to the final time he would play fellow NBA superstar and one of his greatest competitors LeBron James in Cleveland. It is a first for the platform which is only usually focusing on the game.

Like any other official story, the Snapchat team used content from fans themselves present at the arena, adding historic stats, like the fact that Kobe Bryant won the NBA championship five times, and a score recap throughout the story.

Despite the battle billed as one between Kobe and LeBron, the Snapchat story was careful to focus on the Lakers’ superstar including player highlights, Cleveland fans excited and crying seeing Kobe for the last time, ending with his exit from the arena and a standing ovation from the crowd.

Becoming a giant in the digital sports world by covering all NFL games and adding more NBA fixtures as well as football matches in Europe to its platform, Snapchat has set an interesting precedent in focusing particularly on an individual athlete. And you have to wonder whether this will be something used more common in the future.
