QPR officially unveils its new crest after social media consult

Championship side Queens Park Rangers has released its new crest after a six month crowd-sourcing campaign that was launched in July 2015.

After announcing that the 2016/2017 season would be ushered in with a new crest last year, the club felt it only prudent to get the club’s fans involved with the process with a six month consult process lasting from July 2015 to New Year’s eve.

Welcoming submissions, comments, opinions and ideas on the emblem’s design from fans via social media, the club followed in the footsteps of AS Roma who last year took to reddit to gauge opinion on the complete redesign of their digital platforms.

The first step of the discussion focused on the shape and the symbols. Using feedback provided by fans via Twitter, Facebook and the Queens Park Rangers’ website, the club concentrated on implementing a number of features into the design including; change of shapes and hoops, return of initials, new year date and simplification of the design.

After the feedback narrowed down the design choices, the club directed fans to the website’s survey using tweets and posts where they could vote on their preferred design.

At the end, over 17,000 answers were received from more than 10,000 individual supporters.

QPR Co-Chairman Ruben Gnanalingam said that the club had never considered any other way to develop the new crest as the fans were what made the club what it is.

“Fan consultation was crucial to us in designing this new Club crest. The supporters are the lifeblood of QPR, so it was vital that they were involved in the consultation process every step of the way.”

As clubs continue to discover the benefits provided by social media which include a direct way of engaging with fans, it certainly won’t be surprising to see more campaigns like this one, especially considering the direct impact fans get on what’s happening at their club.
