Italian football giant A.S. Roma go with crowdsourcing for their website redesign

After being voted as the sixth worst Champions League club website, the people behind the scenes at A.S. Roma embarked on finding ways to redesign the website.

But instead of using traditional methods like employing a team of designers to create a website using bits and pieces that they liked from other sports clubs around the world, the Serie A and Champions League club took to social media in gauging what fans want and what they didn’t want.

An individual named Paul, on behalf of A.S. Roma took to the social media platform Reddit in asking users of the platform to help with the redesign of the club’s website by contributing ideas to the conversation.

After a request like this, you would normally see a raft of inappropriate or completely unnecessary recommendations. However, the decision to turn to Reddit actually open up a very good and helpful dialogue from writers and designers about what could be done to improve the site.

From issues regarding the navigation to user logins and adverts, the users didn’t hold back and were actually very constructive in their criticism and, surprisingly very little ‘trolls’ interacted in the conversation.

Seemingly taking fan or user engagement to the next level, the thread, found here, didn’t only give fans the chance to respond but used the expertise of others that wouldn’t necessarily be found using conventional methods to help design the website.

Often when a club reaps the rewards from implementing a good idea, it is adopted by other clubs as a way forward. Whether other clubs begin using social media as a tool to help with their improvement is unknown however, in this case Paul from A.S. Roma probably wouldn’t have a problem doing it again considering how successful this instance was proved to be.
