Is there such a thing as too much content on a Facebook page?

There are no set guidelines as to how to run a Facebook Fan Page or a book to tell you what/when/why when starting out so we do have to make it up a little as we go along.  One of the most difficult balancing acts to achieve is on the amount of content.

We don’t like pages that just plug in an RSS feed, we have discovered that.  We don’t like it when pages are just left to stagnate with very little new content.  But is there a case for adding just too much?

I have known people who have un-liked a page when there is just a clutter of information coming in to their news feeds.  But does this count when it comes to football for example?

We love the behind the scenes information, photo’s from match days and competitions as they promote engagement and give us things that we don’t really get otherwise.  It is also necessary for clubs to highlight fixtures and merchandise opportunities to make them commercially viable.  But do we need match commentary?

You could argue that if you have become a fan then you are interested in what is happening all the time.  But this may be the case for hardened fans but could it put off less motivated fans?

I love good engagement on Facebook through competitions for tickets/merchandise, upcoming fixtures (using FB events), the updates on matches and action shots added to the site.  Whilst Twitter is a great news source and you need to keep it very active through squad news, score updates, links to articles, etc.  But is it necessary to feed every comment into the Facebook feed?

I would check out the score updates, as many clubs do now, to keep in touch when away from the game (when trapped on Saturday shopping trips) via Twitter but I would not go to Facebook.  That is where I go for a more in-depth experience of the club/brand.

I am not saying I am right, it is only my view.  We are still experimenting with these platforms and feeling out what is right/wrong for our audience.

What do you think?
