IBM Watson lets fans get closer to the action at this year’s US Open

With the US Open into its second week, tennis fans are well and truly hooked by now.

And those tuning into the US Open app will be enjoying all the benefits of IBM Watson’s contribution to the app.

The computing giant is getting up close and personal with this year’s tournament, powering the official app and helping those fans at the event and those watching on their sofas alike!

The app allows fans inside the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in New York to find bathrooms or stalls to find food and drinks. The app responds to the questions, directing spectators to various parts of the complex and refines its responses over time.

But for fans at home, the app works differently, generating automatic captions for the US Open’s on-demand videos and identifying players and celebrities from photos, making sure that the content the fans are consuming comes directly from the US Tennis Association.

“We want to ensure that fans know that we are the source for all things U.S. Open, that they’re not going to any competitive websites or other digital outlets to get it from someone else,” said Kirsten Corio, the USTA’s managing director of ticket sales and digital strategy. “We want it to be from a source that is fast as possible, and IBM is great at helping us do that.”
