Ford motor racing become the latest sports team to dabble in VR

Virtual Reality is the new kid on the block as far as sport is concerned. It’s not quite mainstream enough just yet for the average consumer to be targeted, but they know it’s coming. The challenge now is to be able to use it in the right way.

We’ve seen MLS club LA Galaxy team up with VR company Laduma to create VR content to bring fans closer to their players through a series of stories based around six players. And now Ford is attempting to bring its own VR stories to fans of its motor racing enterprises.

The motoring giant has launched a new racing app that lets users get much closer to the intensity of racing day in virtual reality, as well as giving fans behind the scenes access to the company and its racing innovations.

Lisa Schoder, digital marketing manager at Ford told Business Wire “We are very excited about this opportunity to provide truly immersive experiences that showcase the best of Ford Motor Company.”

“Our virtual reality platform allows us to tell dramatic, impactful stories, to show a surprising side of Ford,” she added.

The first piece of content on the app is centered around Ford’s return to the Le Mans 24 hour race, where the manufacturer won the race using a new piece of innovative technology.

The app isn’t solely VR based, though. Anyone with an iOS or Android phone can access it and will be given the choice of whether or not to experience the content in VR or not, though this is just another case of technology bringing fans closer to their heroes.
