You wait for one sportswoman to be the main guest of a London Sporting Club lunch and then, like the proverbial London bus, three come along. Not just any three, either, but three Dames, all at one lunch, all in one room and all for you. Katherine Grainger has won more Olympic medals than any other British sportswoman in history, her silver medal in Rio last summer making it four silvers in all to add to her glorious gold at the London Games. The rower is one of the most loved and respected figures in British sport, which is why she has recently been named as the new Chair of UK Sport. Laura Davies, quite simply, is the most accomplished female golfer this country has ever produced. She was the first non-American to finish at the top of the LPGA list, is a seven-time winner of the Ladies European Tour and has a staggering 84 professional wins to her name, including four Majors. And Kelly Holmes makes up this fabulous trio. Formerly a double Commonwealth champion, a double world runner up and European silver medallist and an Olympic bronze medallist, she shook the world of middle-distance running at the 2004 Athens Games by striking gold twice inside a week, first in the 800 metres and then in the 1500 metres. Her double gold rightly saw her become BBC Sports Personality of the Year that December.
