The London Sporting Club was graced with the presence of one of the finest cricketers of all time as we paid homage to the great Kumar Sangakkara yesterday on a sweltering hot day in Mayfair. The second highest ODI scorer of all time, and the fifth highest test batsman in history, entertained another packed dining room with his stories, not just in the crease as he set batting records around the world, but also off the pitch as well, including being shot in the shoulder when his team bus came under fire, and describing Sri Lanka’s rehabilitation after the tragic tsunami. Another serial winner to those guests who have already spoken or who will be speaking soon, Kumar held the audience in the palm of his ungloved hand. Other guests included former Arsenal and England striker Tony Woodcock and former England fast bowler, Devon Malcolm, who relayed how he took 9-57 against South Africa after they made him angry. “Sanga” confirmed what we already suspected. He is a class act on and off the pitch.
